Abstract

Linguists, media scientists and lawyers work with similar things, that is to say speech signs in complex media systems. However, the perspectives of these disciplines are not the same. Linguists and media scientists are interested in speech paradigms of constitution of norms, lawyers looking for clear and ‘objective’ ways to identify ‘the’ meaning of a norm with the aid of the ‘toolkit’ language. How can we connect both these perspectives? In this case, what can do “eHumanities”, especially corpus linguistic tools and methods for the ‘extraction’ of legal meanings? In which way are theories of language and media able to challenge the praxis of lawyers?

These are questions of the conference at Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) from April 25th until April 27th, 2013. The conference will discuss different methods of analysis of norms and meanings in a interdisciplinary way. Furthermore, we will focus on theories of media and law to modeling legal practices in a modern, digitalized world. Finally we have to search for chances, risks and side effects for a corpus based or corpus driven way of legal meaning analysis in context of court and legal commentary (‘juridical corpus pragmatics’).

Following to the conference there will be a short (one hour) session of the german network of study groups ‘language and law’.
